What is the Blue Lagoon?
The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal wonder nestled in a lava field in southwestern Iceland. It’s not just any pool; it’s an otherworldly experience created by water from a nearby geothermal power plant. This mineral-rich water, bubbling up from deep within the Earth, is what makes the Blue Lagoon’s milky-blue waters so soothing and rejuvenating. I’d say it’s the ultimate spot for a skin-loving soak that feels like pure magic.
Where is the Blue Lagoon?
The Blue Lagoon is in the heart of the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwestern Iceland, and according to Iceland in 8 Days, it’s about 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Reykjavik and only 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Keflavik International Airport. I found it super convenient—whether you’re starting or ending your Icelandic adventure, it’s the perfect pit stop. The exact spot? Norðurljósavegur 9, 240 Grindavík, Iceland. Trust me, it’s worth the trip.

Why is the Blue Lagoon in Iceland popular?
I’d say the Blue Lagoon’s popularity stems from a mix of its unique geothermal experience, jaw-dropping scenery and world-class facilities. Soaking in the warm, mineral-rich waters surrounded by black lava fields is something you won’t find anywhere else. It’s also super accessible, close to both the airport and Reykjavik. And with all the luxurious amenities—from in-water bars to a high-end spa—I’d say it’s more than just a hot spring; it’s a full-on wellness destination.
What amenities are at the Blue Lagoon?
During my visit, I discovered the Blue Lagoon offers everything you need for a dreamy day of relaxation. The main lagoon is, of course, the star, but there’s also an in-water bar where I sipped on a refreshing smoothie while floating around. I’d highly recommend trying the mask bar—I loved slathering on the silica mask right in the water! For a more luxurious experience, I’d suggest checking out the Retreat Spa, where I treated myself to my first in-water massage—pure bliss! And if you’re hungry, the Lava Restaurant serves up delicious Icelandic cuisine with stunning views of the lagoon. Plus, the on-site hotels, Silica and Retreat, offer top-notch accommodations if you’re planning to stay overnight. Don’t leave without grabbing some Blue Lagoon skincare products; I’ll dive more into why they’re worth it below!

Why should I visit the Blue Lagoon?
I’d say visiting the Blue Lagoon is an absolute must for anyone looking to unwind and soak in Iceland’s natural beauty. The warm, mineral-rich waters offer a deeply relaxing experience that leaves your skin feeling rejuvenated. Plus, where else can you bathe in a geothermal spa surrounded by lava fields? It’s a uniquely Icelandic experience that combines relaxation, wellness, and breathtaking scenery. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights dancing above the lagoon during the winter months.
When is the best time to visit the Blue Lagoon?
I’d recommend visiting the Blue Lagoon during the summer months (June to August) when the weather is mild, and the days are long. When I visited at the end of May, it was my first time staying somewhere where it didn’t get dark until close to 10 p.m. The whole experience was surreal, making it so much easier to stay out late and enjoy every moment. There’s something magical about soaking in the warm waters under the Midnight Sun! For a more peaceful experience, I’d suggest going early in the morning or late in the evening when it’s less crowded. According to Iceland with a View, the shoulder seasons, like May or September, are ideal—fewer crowds and still lovely weather.

When is the worst time to visit the Blue Lagoon?
As for the worst time, I’d avoid the peak tourist season in July and August, especially midday when it gets super busy. Winter, while still beautiful, can be a bit harsh with freezing temperatures and icy roads, which might make getting in and out of the lagoon less enjoyable. However, if you’re up for the adventure, the steamy waters are always inviting, no matter the season.
What is Blue Lagoon Skincare?
Blue Lagoon Skincare as a premium line of skincare products that capture the essence of the Blue Lagoon itself. These products are packed with minerals, silica, and algae—ingredients that make the lagoon’s waters so special. The Silica Mud Mask is a game-changer for deep cleansing and exfoliating. I use it about once a week, and my skin feels incredibly smooth the next morning. There’s also the Algae Mask, which I love for its anti-aging properties—it’s like a little fountain of youth in a jar. And if your skin needs some serious hydration, the Mineral Mask is a must-try. Each mask offers unique benefits, and I’d say they’re a fantastic addition to any skincare routine.
Is Blue Lagoon Skincare worth buying?
Absolutely, I’d say Blue Lagoon Skincare is worth every penny, especially if you’re into natural, high-quality products. These masks have become staples in my skincare routine, and I’ve noticed a real difference in my skin’s texture and appearance. While the products are on the pricier side, the results speak for themselves—my skin feels firmer, smoother and more hydrated.
